“Then the angel showed me the river of life-giving water, sparkling like crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of its street. On either side of the river grew the tree of life that produces fruit twelve times a year, one each month; the leaves of the trees serve as medicine for the nations.”
This reading struck me this morning as I read the “Magnificat” for today. The “leaves of the trees that serve as medicine for the nations” is that an allusion to the “medicine” which God provides to bring us all back to Him? We know that medicine can be bitter. And the past seven years – perhaps more – have been bitter with our leadership seeking only its own interests and not those of the people they were intended to serve. We have walked too far away from the Lord. Perhaps allowing us to have as our “rulers” those who have evil intentions is His way of drawing us back to Him.
