For God, the living God, I thirst.
Like dew upon the fleece come down,
Like rain upon the desert sand,
Like light into a darkened room.
As parched earth breaks for need of rain,
So my heart breaks but not in vain.
When wilt thou on my vision burst?
For thee, my living God, I thirst.
This reminds me of Psalm 63 “O God, you are my God, for you I long; for you my soul is thirsting.” There are allusions to Gideon and the fleece where he waited for a sign from God. Rain upon the desert sand reminds me of the Exodus. The parched earth breaking for lack of rain – how often have I seen that? And who does not want to see the living God?
